ISO 22000:2018 – FOOD SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (FSMS) CERTIFICATION

ISO 22000:2018 is a newly revised International Food Safety standard that aims to harmonize food safety management requirements for organizations in the food chain on a global scale.

ISO 22000:2018 integrates and supplements the fundamental features of ISO 9001:2015 and HACCP to provide an effective framework for developing, implementing, monitoring, and improving a documented Food Safety Management System (FSMS) in the context of the organization’s overall business risks.

Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS), created by the International Organization for Standardization, is an international standard applicable to all enterprises participating in the food and feed chain, regardless of size or sector.

This standard intends to reduce food safety risks throughout the food and feed supply chain. To ensure that the ISO 22000:2018 standard for food safety management continues to serve enterprises and is relevant in today’s market. ISO 22000:2018 applies to all businesses in the food and feed sectors, regardless of size or industry.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DOCUMENTATION

The following is a list of items found in the Food Safety Management System documentation:
Policy and goals for food safety

• Creating a management system requires planning and design.
• Maintaining records of the system’s performance.
• Forming a Food Safety Team out of a group of certified individuals.
• Develop communication practices to enable successful communication with key external contacts (regulators, customers, suppliers, and others) and good internal communication.
• A contingency plan.
• Holding management review meetings to assess the FSMS’s performance.
• Putting Prerequisite Programs in Place.
• HACCP principles are followed.
• Creating a traceability system for product identification.
• Controlling nonconforming products and establishing a corrective action procedure.
• Maintaining a written procedure for dealing with product withdrawal.
• Monitoring and measurement instruments are under control.
• Creating and sustaining a program for internal auditing.
• The FSMS is being updated and improved regularly

REQUIREMENTS IN GENERAL

ISO 22000:2018 specifies that an organization develop and execute a Food Safety Management System that includes, but is not limited to,

• Effective Prerequisite Programs are in place to guarantee that the environment is clean and sanitary.
• To detect, prevent, and eliminate food safety problems, a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Plan were created.
• Documented food safety management system methods to manage food safety across your firm, from management and business strategy to day-to-day communication and operations that affect food safety.
• Communication that is interactive
• Comply with all applicable statutory and regulatory requirements for food safety.
• To examine and assess customer needs and demonstrate that it complies with mutually agreed-upon customer food safety needs in order to improve customer satisfaction.
• To efficiently communicate food safety issues throughout the food supply chain to their suppliers, customers, and other relevant interested parties.
• To ensure that the organization adheres to its declared food safety policy and that this is successfully demonstrated.
• To get its Food Safety Management System certified or registered by an external body or to conduct a self-assessment or self-declaration of conformance to ISO 22000:2018.
